Pou Kapua - Introduction to Leadership

PURPOSE

The aim of this wānanga (seminar/course) is to provide an introduction to leadership through the holistic learning environment, from a Te Ao Māori perspective.

This wānanga emphasises the importance of reciprocal learning between Tauira (students/trainees) and VHNZ, creating a platform for shared engagement. This fosters a sense of empowerment, self-discovery, and personal growth for Tauira. By tapping into their unique strengths and potential, Tauira can reignite their passion for learning and apply the knowledge gained in their workplace and within their whānau (family) unit.

Pou Kapua - Introduction to Leadership

Chemical Handling and Storage

PURPOSE

Between 600–900 New Zealanders are estimated to die from work-related illness every year, many from chronic illness arising from poor controls on the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous chemicals. This course is designed to train people to identify the health and safety risks of the chemicals in a workplace; and to identify, select and apply the legislated and other controls designed to minimise the exposure of workers to these risks, and ensure the proper reporting.

The course addresses the requirements of a ‘Competent Person’ as specified under r19.1 of the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017

Unit Standards:

31290 Demonstrate knowledge of the safe management and potential adverse effects of hazardous substances in the workplace
31293 Demonstrate safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous substances in the workplace.

Chemical Safety at Work

PURPOSE

This course is designed to train workers to identify the health and safety risks of the chemicals at work and correctly apply controls designed to minimise their exposure to these risks. The course ensures PCBU meet the requirements of Regulation 4.5 of the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017.

Unit Standards:

31292 Demonstrate knowledge of workplace procedures relating to hazardous substances

Chemical Safety at Work

 

 

Operate Breathing Apparatus in a General Emergency

PURPOSE

This unit standard is for fire and rescue personnel in situations requiring the use of self-contained breathing apparatus (BA) primarily for rescue and limited fire attack.

People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of BA and its effects on the physiology of the human body; wear the BA in actual or practical simulated conditions; manage the BA for safe use and survivability; and shut down and recommission the BA.

Permit to Work - Issuer and Receiver

PURPOSE

To prepare a learner to function as a Permit Receiver and or Permit Issuer within a Work Permit system.

Unit Standards:

17588 Apply for, accept and carry out work according to a work permit (receiver)
17590  Issue worksite-specific work permits (issuer)
