The Māori Pasifika roopū ō Poutū Huapae was created in 2017 by passionate VHNZ employees acknowledging the need to better support Māori & Pasifika peoples into training and employment.

Aotearoa New Zealand has a rich cultural landscape, with indigenous values & beliefs often at the heart of engagement, decision making and attitudes.

The Māori Pasifika roopū was created to provide a platform for people, particularly priority groups (including Māori, Pacific peoples and wāhine)  to engage in courses and programmes that encapsulates indigenous values such as manaakitanga, and mana tangata.

Within the training environment, learners can achieve valuable NZQA qualifications in health and safety, construction, infrastructure, and so much more. Our trainers are handpicked and supported by the Māori Pasifika roopū. Our shared values, and experiences strengthen the engagement of learners, therefore enhancing their worldview.

Our Whānau

Having staff who could provide the skill sets needed to create this environment has allowed the roopu to develop and grow. Our staff specialise within 4 key areas:

  1. Selection and administration of people on the programmes.
  2. Pastoral care of people post course.
  3. Specialised staff who provide a safe environment for individual and collective outcomes.
  4. Incorporating NZQA qualifications, tikanga, mentoring and maintaining a safe environment.

Our Relationships

Government, Non-Government Organisations, Iwi and Employers.

The Māori Pasifika roopū have created positive relationships with the Ministry of Social Development, Te Puni Kōkiri, Iwi, Māori organisations and employers that create a pathway for people to be recruited and then achieve employment success. This also allows the roopū to seek funding from a variety of organisations to achieve specific needs.

Our Programmes

Mā te huruhuru, ka rere te manu - Adorn the bird with feathers, so it may soar.

This whakatauki can be used as a metaphor for our programmes. Our learners come from diverse backgrounds. Our programmes re-engage unemployed and under-employed in education and connects them to potential employers and organisations. We believe our learners are diamonds in the rough, with support they can shine and soar like the kārearea (NZ falcon).

Programme length can vary dependent of the requirements of the employer and organisation. Variations can go from a minimum of 3 days and then can be extended based of the funding requirements.

We also offer bespoke training programmes where we come onsite and provide training that is tailored specifically to your needs.

What our
people say

Hi Uki, thank you to you, Jodhi and Koro. I got a full time job today. Love you all Vertical Horizonz. Honestly, without you all playing the vital roles in my life I would have just given up and gone back to selling and using drugs. Today I walked into my job interview and achieved On the spot drug test and passed. First night in decades I go to sleep content and sober knowing I have a fulltime job in the morning. Thank you for my new life.

I am so thankful he came on the programme at Te Ohaki Marae. He has gone from extremely shy to more confident. He is fully employed, and enjoys being with whanau and friends.

Joe has been an excellent graduate of your programme who has shown a great work ethic, is a hard worker and does all that is required of him. In fact, we will be offering him an apprenticeship shortly and wanted to share this news with you. Do you have any other graduates like him?
