INFO
The aim of this wānanga (seminar/course) is to provide an introduction to leadership through the holistic learning environment, from a Te Ao Māori perspective.
This wānanga emphasises the importance of reciprocal learning between Tauira (students/trainees) and VHNZ, creating a platform for shared engagement. This fosters a sense of empowerment, self-discovery, and personal growth for Tauira. By tapping into their unique strengths and potential, Tauira can reignite their passion for learning and apply the knowledge gained in their workplace and within their whānau (family) unit.
At the successful completion of this wānanga, the Tauira will be able to:
- Demonstrate leadership skills.
- Make a positive impact in their workplace and within their whanau unit.
- Contribute to collective learning.
- Empower themselves and others.
Apart from the specific job requirements from the parent organisation, course attendees require these qualities:
- Tauira transitioning into a leadership role e.g., leading hand, supervisor, or first line manager.
- Tauira who are seeking to explore the skills and knowledge necessary for leadership.
- Tauira who are looking at supporting their own professional development by enhancing their leadership skills.
“I have really enjoyed Pou Kapua session. It was so good to share closing thoughts of the experiences of last year with everyone. It is almost therapeutic to go through these things as a rite of passage in a way. I would recommend anyone participating and sharing that this programme is a great introduction to leadership with a Māori lens”.

“Pou Kapua was one of, if not the best course I’ve been on yet. The feel of the course and the style in which it was run was awesome. And completely different to other courses I’ve been on. I liked the style with the 3 trainers teaching us and how we all felt like a group while we were doing it”.

“Pou Kapua for me was a great opportunity for growth, not just professional but personal as well. It helped me to understand what I would like out of a manager/ Leader and paths towards becoming that leader. The way the course was delivered allowed for a very raw and authentic look at pervious experiences, and really helped me to grow and understand them more deeply. The project I undertook for Pou Kapua was probably not a project most people would think of for leadership. but the concepts taught allowed me to realize that leadership comes through in many ways and that we will be the best leaders if we are Tika and Pono with ourselves”.
