Info

Purpose

This course enables the individual to operate a chainsaw effectively and safely for the purposes of limbing and firewood cutting as would be required in the workplace.

Entry Criteria

The course requires a level of fitness to demonstrate competency for the skill being trained.

Recommended Pre-Learning

It is recommended for unit standard 6917:
US 6916 - Demonstrate knowledge of the rules relating to chainsaw use

Skills Learned

In line with “best practice” guidelines this course encompasses both theory and practical lessons covering the following; legal requirements surrounding chainsaw use, use of PPE, basic chainsaw maintenance, chain sharpening and bar dressing, pre-start checks, correct starting and operating techniques.

This course utilises a mix of theory and practical delivery. It does not cover use of a chainsaw on hill country.

Site Requirements

To deliver chainsaw training at your site an appropriate open space to conduct the practical lessons is required, as well as material to saw.

VHNZ will provide a full set of chainsaw equipment, but trainees are welcomed and encouraged to make their own equipment available for use during training.

Please note all equipment supplied must be compliant.

Attendance Numbers

Minimum: 6

Maximum: 8

Refresher

Where the use of chainsaws is not an employee’s core job, and recognising the dangerous nature of operating a chainsaw, it is recommended as “best practice” that refresher training is completed every two years.
