The purpose of this qualification is to provide trainees with skills in suspended scaffolding that will allow them to work in residential construction or maintenance sectors. Graduates of the programme will be eligible to apply for the Scaffolding Certificate of Competence (Suspended), as required under Health and Safety regulations.

Purpose
Course Objectives
1. Apply safe working practices while working at heights in accordance with health and safety legislation and the Good Practice Guidelines for Scaffolding in New Zealand
2. Calculate weights to sling regular loads using the appropriate lifting equipment.
3. Lead a small team to complete simple or suspended scaffold works.
4. Erect, alter and dismantle suspended proprietary scaffold structures, including: hand haul and powered bosuns chairs, and swinging stages.
5. Apply knowledge of quantities, loading and geometry to calculate imposed loads and counterweights including factor of safety for proprietary suspended scaffold structures, to meet client requirements.
Entry Requirements
- Be over 16 years of age.
- Be in employment in New Zealand and engaging with work related to the scope of the programme. The employer and applicant, in conjunction with VHNZ, must complete a training agreement.
- Be physically fit and able to demonstrate physical competency for the skills being trained.
- This programme is funded by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC). Trainees must be New Zealand or Australian Citizens or Residents.
- Must hold a valid current first aid certificate

Pathways
EMPLOYMENT PATHWAY
Graduates of this qualification, once they have been issued with the Certificate of Competence (Elementary), are most likely to be employed as a scaffolder erecting and dismantling simple scaffolds for largely residential construction purposes but may also be in other areas in accordance with Health and Safety regulations and client requirements.
EDUCATION PATHWAY
This qualification leads to the New Zealand Certificate in Scaffolding (Trade) (Level 4).
This qualification may lead to the New Zealand Apprenticeship in Scaffolding (Trade) Level 4 and the New Zealand Certificate in Scaffolding (Advanced) Level 5.
Graduates may also consider pursuing a career in the cranes sector, as the skills and knowledge acquired in this qualification can be effectively transferred to related certifications within that industry.
