Our safety begins with our people. Te Rōpū Marutau o Aotearoa (TRMA) and Vertical Horizonz are co-developing a micro-credential grounded in Haumaru Tāngata — a kaupapa Māori approach to health, safety, and wellbeing in the workplace. This micro-credential will honour both law and lore — aligning with Aotearoa's H&S legislation while embedding the cultural values, practices, and leadership that protect and uplift our people.

 

We invite kaimahi, employers, HSRs, cultural leaders, trainers, and anyone passionate about this kaupapa to register their interest below.

Thanks to the generosity of HSI Donesafe and Vertical Horizonz, we’re offering two scholarships to support learners into the New Zealand Certificate in Workplace Health and Safety Practice (Level 3) — a nationally recognised qualification that empowers people to lead and contribute to safer workplaces, whānau, and communities.

This opportunity is offered through Te Rōpū Marutau o Aotearoa (TRMA) as part of our ongoing commitment to growing Māori capability, representation, and leadership in health, safety, and wellbeing. We are seeking applicants who are committed to learning, connected to their communities, and ready to contribute to a safer future — especially Māori and those whose voices are often underrepresented in this space.

This part-time course runs over 20 weeks and includes:

– Seven face-to-face training days at a Vertical Horizonz centre
– Online learning and assessments
– 340 hours of practical, workplace-based experience
– Guidance, pastoral support, and a co-designed learner plan 
The scholarship covers your course fees. You’ll need to cover your own transport, accommodation, and meals for any required in-person training.

Terms and Conditions

He taonga te ako – learning is a treasure. This scholarship represents an investment in your journey, your whānau, and the future of safer workplaces.

1. Eligibility

To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must:
– Be aged 18 or older
– Live in or near a main centre (e.g. Whangārei, Papakura, East Tāmaki, Hamilton, Tauranga, Rotorua, Whakatāne, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Upper Hutt, Nelson, Christchurch, Cromwell)
– Have access to a workplace or industry setting to complete 340 hours of practical learning
– Be available to attend seven face-to-face training days at a Vertical Horizonz training centre

2. Travel and Costs

This scholarship covers course fees only. Travel, accommodation, meals, and any other associated costs must be covered by the applicant. This includes transport to and from training locations.

3. Commitment to Learning

Successful recipients are expected to:
– Complete a pre-enrolment interview and learner needs assessment
– Undertake LLN (literacy and numeracy) testing to ensure appropriate support is in place
– Co-design a personalised Learner and Qualification Plan
– Complete 340 hours of workplace-based learning
– Engage fully in online learning and assessments
– Attend all face-to-face training days
– Maintain regular communication and seek support when needed

4. Support and Responsibility

Recipients will be supported by experienced trainers and advisors throughout the programme. In return, learners are expected to uphold the values of respect, participation, and responsibility. If you face challenges, please communicate early so we can awhi you.

5. Withdrawal or Incompletion

If a learner withdraws or fails to meet programme requirements without valid reason, the scholarship may be withdrawn and future access to funded opportunities may be affected.

6. Selection Process

Applications will be reviewed using a transparent and fair process. Shortlisted applicants may be invited to a short kōrero (phone or video). Final selection will consider readiness, need, alignment with the kaupapa, and potential to contribute to whānau and community wellbeing.

7. Privacy and Information

All personal information will be handled with care and stored securely. It will only be used for the purposes of selection and programme support.

8. Use of Your Name and Story

If selected, you may be invited to share your story, photo, and achievements for promotional or marketing purposes (e.g. social media, website, or printed materials). We will always seek your approval before sharing, and your mana and privacy will be respected at all times.
