PURPOSE

This course aims to produce an operator that can safely demonstrate knowledge of the skills and attributes for Four Wheel Drive (4WD) driving both on and off road.

ENTRY CRITERIA

Learners must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age.
  • Hold a minimum of a New Zealand class 1 restricted driver’s licence.
  • Have access to a light 4WD vehicle (described below) and suitable roads.
  • Be physically fit and able to demonstrate physical competency for the skill being trained.

NOTE: This course requires the use of a light 4WD vehicle (any four-wheel vehicle with a gross laden weight less than 3500kg and capable of having motive power applied simultaneously to all four wheels).

Additional charges may apply if a vehicle must be hired.

SITE REQUIREMENTS

ON ROAD

Formed road or track that is (three surfaces required):

  • Fine gravel on hard base.
  • Wet sealed.
  • Ice road.
  • Sealed surface with fresh mud on it.
  • Dry sealed road surface.

 

OFF ROAD

  • Hill ascents and descents.
  • Traversing hill.
  • Hill fail.
  • Water crossings (note no more than 0.5m in depth).
