Training Success: Overcoming Barriers with Innovation and Empathy

Recently, one of Longveld's fabricators of stainless-steel cabinets, who has been deaf since around the age of two, underwent specialised training on Sling and Overhead Crane operations. This one-on-one training was conducted by Aaron Shepard from VHNZ, a trainer with a unique personal connection to the deaf community—his granddaughter was born deaf, giving him a deep understanding of the challenges faced by those with hearing impairments.

The trainee, Christian, proficient in both NZ and US sign languages, and Aaron devised an innovative communication strategy to ensure the training was effective and smooth. They utilised a combination of text-to-speech and speech-to-text functions on a phone, along with a trusty whiteboard for written instructions and clarifications.

During the practical sessions, maintaining a clear line of sight was crucial. Aaron and Christian used hand signals to communicate, ensuring safety and clarity in their interactions. This approach not only facilitated effective learning but also highlighted the importance of adaptability and empathy in training environments.

This training session is a testament to how barriers can be overcome with the right tools and understanding. Kudos to Aaron and Christian for their dedication and innovative spirit!
