Paralympian Nikita Howarth Takes on MEWP Training with Determination

Nikita Howarth is no stranger to overcoming challenges. Born with a congenital bilateral arm deficiency, she has defied expectations throughout her life—first in the pool, where she became New Zealand’s youngest Paralympian and a gold medallist, and now in the trades, where she is forging a new path as an apprentice painter.

Last week, Nikita took on yet another challenge: Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) training with Vertical Horizonz New Zealand (VHNZ). Guided by experienced trainer Tania, she tackled the practical aspects of operating MEWPs with enthusiasm and determination.

“Despite Nikita’s disability, I admired her determination to give anything a go and not give up,” said Tania. “Although she was slightly hesitant and nervous about operating both MEWPs, she quickly managed to overcome these challenges and perform all relevant tasks to the highest standard. The look of pure joy and excitement on her face when she was on the machines was so rewarding.”

Nikita’s successful completion of the MEWP training is just one step in her ambitious journey. With a goal to become a highly skilled painter, she also has aspirations to expand her expertise into electrical work and possibly even construction.

“My main goal is to be a fantastic, qualified painter and then learn something new after that. I don’t want to stop!” she shared enthusiastically.

At VHNZ, seeing learners succeed is a top priority, and Nikita’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and ambition. Congratulations, Nikita—we can’t wait to see what you achieve next!
