New Height Safety Standards Signal a Safer Future for Kiwi Workers

At Vertical Horizonz (VHNZ), we believe that every worker deserves to return home safely at the end of the day. That’s why we’re proud to support the recent updates to key height safety standards—AS 5532 and AS/NZS 1891.4—which mark a significant step forward in protecting those working at height across Aotearoa and Australia.

These changes, announced by Standards Australia, respond to alarming statistics in both New Zealand and Australia. In Australia, in 2023 alone, nearly 30 workers lost their lives due to falls from height, accounting for 15% of all workplace fatalities. With the construction industry responsible for 45% of these deaths. While in New Zealand WorkSafe reported 645 injuries and 12 deaths from falls from height between 2022 and 2023 The need for robust, practical, and modernised safety standards has never been more urgent.

What’s Changed—and Why It Matters

AS 5532, which governs the manufacturing requirements for single-point anchor devices, has been revised to allow installation on a broader range of roof structures, including timber and steel purlins. This is a game-changer for trades like solar installation, roof cleaning, and maintenance—making it easier to install compliant anchor points and reducing risks like swing falls and free falls.

Meanwhile, AS/NZS 1891.4 now offers updated guidance on the selection, use, and maintenance of fall-arrest systems. These changes empower designers, safety managers, and workers to make informed decisions based on current industry practices—without adding extra costs or training burdens.

A Voice for New Zealand in Standards Development

We’re especially proud to highlight the contribution of Andrew Sykes, VHNZ’s Head of Delivery, who represents SARNZ (Scaffolding, Access & Rigging New Zealand) on the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand Committee SF-015. Andrew plays a pivotal role in ensuring that New Zealand’s unique working environments and industry needs are reflected in the development of these standards.

His involvement ensures that Kiwi perspectives are not only heard but actively shape the future of height safety across Australasia. It’s a testament to VHNZ’s commitment to leadership in safety and our ongoing mission to deliver real training that saves lives.

What This Means for You

For New Zealand businesses and workers, these updates mean:

  • Improved clarity in equipment selection and maintenance.
