Andrew is our VHNZ Quality Manager. It is his job to maintain the quality of trainer outputs, resources, trainer materials and quality of trainers, along with the development of new projects. He and his Quality Assurance team see that VHNZ quality of training is second to none! He is also a Health & Safety, Industrial Safety and Adult Education trainer.
Andrew spent 13 years in the NZ Army as a team member and instructor. Throughout his career in the Army, Andrew has enjoyed imparting his knowledge and skills to others so they can themselves learn and develop. We are lucky to now have his knowledge and expertise within VHNZ.
Andrew, what is your first memory of the importance of safety?
I remember as a kid some of the adventurous (or silly) things that made me take stock of the importance of safety such as jumping off high structures like my parent's roof. Luckily there was a softish landing, unfortunately it doesn't make the landing any better.

What has surprised you most about working within Health and Safety, Industry training?
I am often surprised by the ineffectiveness of some Health & Safety systems within New Zealand. Particularly the lack of Health & Safety procedures in place for external people visiting a business or entering a worksite.
What do you wish other people knew about safety in New Zealand?
I wish people would have more of a practical application to safety in the workplace.
Tell me about something you've learnt while working at VHNZ?
There are a number of different interpretations to the Health & Safety systems; it's about finding the right fit for your business.
What might (someone) be surprised to know about you?
I am relaxed and approachable.
If you were alone on a desert island and could only take three items what would you take?
A plane ticket to get off, some wine and winning lotto ticket.
